Community Focused

Panther City Rugby, Inc. (“PCR”) promotes the sport of Rugby Union Football (“Rugby”) to residents of the Greater Fort Worth Area by providing education, recreational, competitive and volunteer activities.  PCR’s aim is to provide safe, fun, educational programs that build its participants’ physical, mental, social abilities to give them skills for life and, if they wish, allow them to progress towards selection for USA Rugby’s National and Olympic teams.  Participation in Panther City Rugby activities helps individuals develop greater self-esteem, broaden their leadership and teamwork skills, improve their fitness and build lifelong friendships among other positive attributes related to their involvement with the sport.

PCR is dedicated to improving the participation of youth and female athletes from area communities and schools in Rugby. Many of the youth we serve are from low-income households or otherwise disadvantaged backgrounds, and are often classified as at-risk. PCR coordinates with area NGO's (i.e. Boys & Girls Clubs), schools and governments to provide positive community programs designed to mitigate juvenile and adult delinquency through participation in the sport of Rugby. This means that PCR focuses on educational, charitable and mentoring activities as much as organizing recreational and competitive activities, and as an inclusive organization, Panther City Rugby offers many activities on a free or low-cost basis. However, participation on travel teams to fulfil one's rugby potential does bring a significant cost burden.  Whenever possible, PCR seeks to subsidize these activities or provide financial assistance and scholarships to those who are eager but unable to meet the costs of participation.  Moreover, Panther City Rugby seeks to ensure that participants from affluent and deprived backgrounds alike compete as teammates and equals, engender good sportsmanship, and experience unmitigated mutual respect and camaraderie.

Central to PCR's youth programing is its work to open more opportunities for females to participate in rugby, a previously male dominated sport. In 2007, PCR was the first in Texas to have high school-based girls rugby teams.  While girls rugby participation in has since exploded in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, PCR continues to assist female rugby teams get organized around the North Central Texas Region.  Furthermore, PCR is leading the way to achieving rugby as a varsity sport for females at the high school and collegiate level.  Our experience has shown that a significant number of females want to and are capable of playing tackle / collision sports at a high level of athleticism.  The lessons learned in practice and competition bring personal growth, positive self-esteem, and willingness to face off-field barriers.

Any member of the public can become involved with Panther City Rugby and its programs, which provide opportunities to learn, train, play, coach, referee and volunteer. PCR has male and female participants of all ages, including some as young as three years old and others well into retirement.
