While Title IX violoations related to athletics is often focused on "extra-curricular" activities, in Texas most (if not all) schools offer athletic periods as an in-school curricular option to satisfy physical educaiton and elective course requirements.  The grade received for the course(s) taken may contribute to a student's GPA calculation.

  • University Interscholastic League (UIL) No Pass, No Play Policy, page 13
    • "A student shall be suspended from participation in any extracurricular activity sponsored or sanctioned by the District or the UIL
      after a grade evaluation period in which the student received a grade lower than a 70 in any class other than Exempt Courses. An
      Exempt Course is an AP, IB, Honors or Pre-AP, or a dual credit course in the subject areas of English language arts, mathematics,
      science, social studies, economics, or a language other than English. Districts can identify additional honors courses."

    • PE Substitution Courses  - may be permitted in any of the following earning up to one credits.
      • ​​Dirll Team (aka Dance Team), Cheerleading, Marching Band, JROTC
    • PE Substitution Courses - may be permitted in any of the following earning up to four credits.
      • Athletics/UIL Athletics
      • Approved private program (must be preapproved by Director of PE)
  • Selecting P.E. Substitutions & Athletics as Elective, page 138
    • Substitution activties (i.e. athletics) ... "may be awarded up to four PE credits
      toward graduation, one for the required physical education credit and three additional PE credits as state elective credits."
    • "Athletics may be awarded up to four credits toward graduation, one for the required physical education credit and three additional credits as state electives."
    • "Provides instruction and practice for members of competitive athletics teams."
    • "Prerequiste: Student is required to complete the UIL Pre-Participation Evaluation ─ Medical History form and the UIL Pre-Participation Evaluation-Physical Examination form before participation in any practice before, during, or after school."
  • Athletic Sports for State Graduation Credit, page 139
    • "Student enrolling in the following athletic sports will receive state graduation credit which will be credited in the following way, one for PE substitution and three elective credits, up to a total of four graduation credits. All of these courses will count in the calculation of the student’s grade point average (GPA) as a Tier III course. These courses will also count as credit toward graduation requirements. Students may not change their schedules after the 10th day class period ends without a penalty."
      • Boys Sports: Basketball, Soccer, Tennis, Track, Wrestling, Baseball, Football, Cross Country, Golf, Swimming
      • Girls Sports: Basketball, Soccer, Tennis, Track, Wrestling, Softball, Volleyball, Cross Country, Golf, Swimming
      • Notes:
        • All athletic offerings are limited to UIL sanctioned sports.
        • Student may or may not be allowed to enroll (or remain enrolled) based on team tryouts per course syllabus.
        • Pre the above stipulation, an inequality of opprotunities is created for females to participate.  Further, females enrolled in male athletic periods are not provided the same education but rather given managerial roles.
  • Physical Education Substitution Activities, page 140
    • "The following substitution activities of drill team, cheerleading, marching band, and JROTC may be awarded one PE substitution credit toward graduation that may satisfy the physical education credit requirement."
      • Drill Team (aka Dance Team)
        • "Includes training to enable members of the drill team to perform at football games, basketball games, and other school functions. One credit for PE substitution will be available. All Drill Team classes after the one credit PE substitution will only count as a local credit." - page 142
      • ​​Cheerleading
        • "Both fall and spring semesters of Team Cheerleading may now substitute for PE credit, provided students engage in 100 minutes of “moderate to vigorous activity” per five –day school week." - page 142
