FWISD High School Sports Survey - Initial Attempt

Below is a sample of the survey sent to FWISD middle and high school principals in late January, 2019*, for female and male students to complete between January 24 and February 8.  By February 7th only six of the 39 schools had more than 90 of their respective students complete the survey. Twenty-nine schools showed less than 10 students each competing the survey.  Given the low number of response the deadline was extended at least one additional week.  Clearly the survey was not seen as being of importance by administrators at the campus and/or "central administration" level.  The same academic year, FWISD pushout three other surveys for students to complete: "Stakeholders' Climate Survey"; "Brightbytes" technology survey; and, "Senior Exit Survey".  All three of these District surveys were supported by FWISD social media announcements and/or email campaigns to encourage participation.

When a "reminder email" was sent out, most high school campus administrators directed the survey towards the coaches of varsity sports to have their students complete during their athletic period (all UIL/varsity sports have a corresponding elective period during the school day) and possibly during PE classes, if the coach teaches one.  A few HS principals did manage to direct some of their other elective and core teachers to have their students complete the survey.  This, however, is not even close to designating 10-15 minutes during the school's common community period to ensure ALL appropriate students are aware of the survey and have access to complete it.  That is what was promised to have happened.  There were other issues with the rollout and execution that may have also skewed the results.

Despite issues with its implementation, FWISD reports roughly 37% of the targeted students responded to the survey.  Given that this survey will be used as a metric in the District's compliance with Title IX, a key statistic yet to be disclosed is the proportion of female students in grades 8 - 11 that responded to the survey.  They are the underrepresented sex in athletic opportunities.

Unfortunately, the survey doesn't address the scheduling of sports seasons as a potential deterrent to female sports participation.  The heavy loading of female sports, thus athletic opportunities, to the spring semester was brought to FWISD's attention in a "Demand Letter" sent to the District on May 31, 2017 and again by female students during April 28, 2018, Board of Education meeting.

A report on the results of the survey is expected during the second half of March, 2019.

* Note: Distribution of a sports interest survey was initially promised for early fall semester 2018.  Then, it was supposed to go out in November/December 2018 but was postponed again to be completed January 24 thought February 8, 2019.  That is at least 18 months after the legal response to the girls' demand letter.
